Minimalism is the in-thing for travelers these days. Who doesn’t want to travel with nothing but a carry-on bag and breeze through customs and checkpoints?
However, there are some items that I simply cannot compromise on. After all, traveling is all about the experience, and if you take away certain essentials, it just doesn’t feel right anymore.
Here are the 8 items I always pack when I go traveling, regardless of location.
1. Travel Adapter
By far, one of the most important items on my list. I use a travel adapter that also has a USB port, which is handy for charging any of my mobile devices on the go as well.
2. Ziploc Bags
Critical for saving space in your bag and keeping it smelling relatively clean. IKEA sells a ton of these for cheap – I bought a box two years ago, and still use them till today.
3. Bluetooth Earphones
When you’re on the move, it’s always great to have everything readily accessible. Wires tend to get in the way of that, which is why I opt for bluetooth earphones. One less mess to deal with!
My earphones of choice: Plantronics Backbeat Go 2
4. Portable Charger
For those time when you just can’t seem to find a power plug – and you’ll be surprised how often that happens.
5. Wet Wipes
Extremely useful in a pinch, especially when you’re rushing around anywhere in Asia. Feeling hot and sticky is a sure way to spoil the travel experience.
6. Travel Bathroom Essentials
Never assume that your hotel or holiday apartment has all the toiletries you need. If you’re picky, take travel-sized amounts of your favorite shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and so on wherever you go.
7. Small Medicine Kit
Falling sick is one of the worst things that can happen to you when traveling. Be prepared for this, especially if you’re susceptible to certain ailments. Panadol and flu medicine are a must for me.
8. Emergency Cash
The Singaporean in me demands that I be prepared for any situation – including being robbed and left to die on the streets. Be sure to store small amounts of cash randomly in your luggage just in case the worst happens.
